Visitors to Sweeny will often ask

"Where is Sweeny's Museum?"

Most small towns throughout the US will have a museum to display their history, however, that can cost a lot of money.  The Rotary Club of Sweeny tried for many years to provide a museum, but the process was difficult to say the least.  In 2019 an idea was presented by one of our Rotarians to have an outdoor museum.  The project came to life.  After many hours of research and much collaboration, A Walk Through Sweeny's History became a reality.

The Walk is located in Backyard Park along a well used walking trail.  As our citizens and visitors of Sweeny stop to take a break from their walk, they can read anyone of the 8 granite engraved markers.  Each marker tells the story of a very important part of Sweeny's History.  From the beginning when John Sweeny arrived here with his family and all their belonging, to the railroad, the petrochemical industry that Sweeny is so well known for, the creation of the School District, The Hospital, Notable people that helped Sweeny to grow and the Unknown Soldier in the Sweeny Cemetery. This outdoor museum is an ongoing part of the Sweeny Community with room for more markers and more history.  Each marker has an engrave plaque with a QR code.  By scanning the code on each marker history seekers can see on their mobile device the photos that further explain the History of Sweeny.

Did you know that Sweeny was once called Adamston?

Go read about it in the Backyard Park
